Up for sale is a phenomenal antique 19th century oil painting depicting a handful or beached schooners at sunset. Many small figures are painted in who are attempting to salvage the ships even pulling one by rope. The bones of old ships are visible in front of the ships showing a destroyed hull like the ribcage of an animal. The work is singed in the lower right corner "W.J. Brown" and is dated in pencil verso 1877. Additional pencil inscriptions are present verso but are illegible on the bottom stretcher bar as well as a couple of gallery/collection inventory numbers. The colors used are excellent from the greens, yellows and orange creating a dynamic painting that looks superb when hung. The work shows its appropriate age with minimal craquelure. An old rubber stamp is still partially visible on the backside of the canvas from the art supplier. The frame, which is new to the work, measures 16.5 x 12.75 inches while the oil painting measures 10 x 14 inches. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine antique English oil painting of beached schooners at sunset but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
