Up for sale is this wonderful old master watercolor painting depicting castle ruins on a lakes edge in a fine European landscape. Large mountains in the background are present with just a visible silhouette while two men in a boat are present in the foreground. The middle ground really focuses on the main subject of the image, the castle and the couple of sheep on the boulders in front. This watercolor carries some significant age appearing to easily date from the 18th century; while unsigned and or dated it’s difficult to tell. The painting is expertly crafted by a clearly highly talented artist who had been trained how to paint a fine landscape. The condition of the work shows toning, discoloration and some foxing all of which could be restored by a paper conservator. This is an excellent work to consider restoration as it would more than bring it back to life in a significant fashion! The frame is extremely old which can be seen verso.
