Up for sale is a beautiful and exceedingly rare oil painting by the celebrated 20th century self taught Jamaican artist Mallica “Kapo” Reynolds. Reynolds is the most celebrated and desirable Jamaican artists from the “intuitive” artistic movement which was the chosen name by the National Portrait Gallery of Jamaica to describe self taught and or primitive artists of the period. This fine unframed painting is executed in oil on board measuring 18 x 21.5 inches and is titled by the artist “Sunny Side” as seen verso. Additionally the location of the painting is “Guys Hill Road" located North West of Kingston in St. Catherine, Jamaica. Having the location is always a much added bonus for any painting! This landscape features green rolling mountains and hills stacked upon each other while a nearly uniform line of trees intersect the middle ground. I particularly love the waviness of the sky which almost imitates the shape of the land below it. White wispy clouds almost allows you to feel the strong Caribbean breeze moving through the air. Signed and dated 1967 this painting was executed at the height of the artists notoriety and is a strong example of his landscape paintings. Clearly showing cosmetic imperfections and minor damage including loss to its edges and corners, surface abrasions and minor loss this painting is a perfect candidate and more than worthy of a professional restoration. This exceedingly rare work is well executed and just an overall tremendous example from the fantastic Jamaican 20th century artist! The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine landscape of St. Catherine but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
