Up for sale is a gorgeous painting by the 19th-20th century American painter H. Chadwick Hunter. While little is known about the artist he lived around the D.C. area and was the author of the short book titled “The American Indian in Painting” found in the collection of the Smithsonian Library. Clearly a talented painter, I have been unable to locate any other examples from the artist making this work quite rare. Executed in gouache and watercolor on artist board, this painting depicts two purple iris flowers in a yellow vase with oriental decorations. Resting atop a lovely colorful ornate rug, a small porcelain bowl sits in front sitting upon a carved stand, like the vase, with a large round sun in the window behind. Signed in the upper left corner “H. Chadwick Hunter” this painting measures 20 x 9.5 inches while its contemporary frame measures 28.25 x 17.25 inches. The condition of the painting is fine while the frame may show some minimal wear. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this rare painting by H. Chadwick Hunter but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
