Up for sale is a wonderful original political cartoon illustration by the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Jay “Ding” Darling who mostly worked primarily for the Des Moines Register. This early 20th century illustration comments on the lack of rights Japan had in China with the text “All we want is a signed agreement recognizing Japan’s exclusive proprietary rights in China - Sign here….”. A three-tiered pagoda filled with armed soldiers take up the background while the foreground shows three Japanese figures (one holding a gun, the other a pen) handing the agreement over to a large man with “China” across his back. Executed in black ink on paper this large cartoon measures 28 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches and is signed in the low right corner “Ding”. This rare illustration shows soiling, wrinkling, creases, discoloration, cuts, knicks and a water stain to its low right corner. This illustration is currently laid down to board but it had appeared to have been rolled prior which is when it succumbed to most of its damage. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this Ding Darling illustration but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
