Up for sale is an absolutely wonderful original painting by the native South Carolina painter and ornithologist Edward Von Siebold Dingle. This painting is executed in watercolor and gouache depicting a fabulously colorful painted bunting standing upon tall reeds of grass picking at its seeds. Signed in the lower right corner “EVS Dingle”, this work measures 16 x 9 inches while what appears to be its original frame measures 23 x 16 inches. Edward was not only famous for his thousands of paintings of birds but well known in the field of ornithology for discovering and recording multiple new species. He was part of many exhibitions including the first American Exhibition of bird painting in Los Angeles in 1926 and had a one-man show at the Museum of Natural History in New York in 1934 showcasing over 60 paintings just to name a few. The condition of this painting is excellent showing just minimal toning and the frame, while very nice, shows rubbing on its bottom edge.
