Up for sale is an incredibly rare and fine mid-19th-century hand-colored lithograph depicting a Yorkshire Terrier looking at a white repaired porcelain dog in front of an oil painting of two figures. Originally painted by Thomas Earl, as seen in the low left plate, this lithograph was then printed by the talented English printmaker Thomas Fairland as seen in the low right plate. Published in London on January 1st, 1851 by the famous Messrs Fores as seen in plate low center this is the only known example I have been able to locate of this image. The original color has remained quite well and the sheet is also in quite nice condition with minimal small creases and or minor surface imperfections. The small brown Terrier stand upon an artist’s sketchbook while drawing and painting tools sit on the countertop. The small white porcelain figure of the short nose dog has been apparently repaired visible with the lines present throughout the entire piece. It would appear that the Terrier has more than likely knocked it down either trying to play with the figure or while trying to intimidate. An artist portfolio stands up in the back right while a large oil painting on canvas in an ornate gold wood frame covers the back left. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this rare and sweet antique English lithograph but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
