This phenomenal important wood carving depicting "The Lamentation of Christ" is carved from oak and measures 14.5 inches tall by 11 inches wide. Multiple experts have agreed on the date of origin placing its creation between 1490 and 1500; carved in either Antwerp, Brussels or Malines. This would have been part of a larger altarpiece that depicted the life of Christ which could have had up to a dozen additional carvings. Generally the center of the altarpiece would display Christ on the cross with the lamentation just below. In good overall condition this does have a strange diamond shaped insert as seen verso of unknown purpose.
